Indian man pleads guilty to creating fake Coinbase website and stealing $9.5 million in crypto
BlockBeats news, April 21, CoinDesk reported that Indian citizen Chirag Tomar pleaded guilty to U.S. charges this week that he and his accomplices created a fake Coinbase Pro website to deceive Coinbase customers into providing their login information. From June 2021 to Tomar's arrest at the end of 2023, more than $9.5 million in cryptocurrency was stolen from at least 542 victims.
Chirag Tomar, 30, was arrested at the Atlanta airport on December 20, 2023, while visiting relatives on a travel visa. He was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to launder money. Both crimes carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
