BlockBeats News, January 17, Megan Barbero, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), will resign next week, joining the wave of departures of senior officials who have been responsible for legal battles with the crypto industry in recent years.
Regarding Barbero's departure, SEC Chairman Gary Gensler said in a statement: "Her thoughtful advice and judgment have been critical to the Commission's decisions." Barbero's resignation is scheduled for January 20, coinciding with the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
Barbero is the agency's Chief Legal Officer, responsible for advising on how the legal department handles disputes with crypto firms in federal courts and advising on its enforcement posture. She has served as General Counsel since February 2023.
SEC's Enforcement Chief Gurbir Grewal resigned in October, while the agency's controversial crypto accounting policy head, Chief Accountant Paul Munter, also announced this week that he will resign soon. (CoinDesk)
