BlockBeats News, June 19th, according to Cointelegraph's report, Mehdi Farooq, an investment partner at the crypto venture firm Hypersphere, revealed on Thursday that he lost most of his life savings in a targeted phishing attack initiated through a forged Zoom call.
Farooq explained in a post that the attack began with a message he received on Telegram from someone claiming to be a person he knew, Alex Lin. "He said he wanted to catch up," Farooq recalled. The two had indeed communicated before, so the contact seemed legitimate. Farooq then shared his Calendly link with Lin, who scheduled a meeting for the next day.
Just a few minutes before the scheduled call, Lin requested to switch to Zoom Business for "compliance reasons" and mentioned that his limited partner (LP) Kent would join the call, a name Farooq was familiar with. As Farooq was dealing with fund management matters at the time, this request did not raise his suspicions.
Later, he discovered that Alex Lin's actual account had been compromised. According to Farooq, this attack was related to a North Korean group called "dangrouspassword."
