According to an official announcement, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced that Kevin Muhlendorf will officially become the new Inspector General of the agency on July 28th. Mr. Muhlendorf previously served as a lawyer at the SEC and the Department of Justice. For the past nine years, he has been a partner at the Washington, D.C. law firm Wiley Rein LLP, focusing on representing individuals and entities in white-collar criminal defense and government investigation matters in criminal and civil securities enforcement cases. Acting Inspector General Katherine Reilly will return to the position of Deputy Inspector General.
During his private practice, Mr. Muhlendorf often led sensitive internal investigations and provided compliance advice to clients. From 2023 to 2024, he was seconded to Wiley Rein to serve as the Acting Inspector General of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), leading a team of over thirty auditors and special investigators to conduct inquiries and publish financial and performance audit reports. He also designed and implemented a whistleblower reward pilot program.
