As a co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin's every move is always closely watched, and his wallet address has become a "reference" for crypto investors to follow industry trends, sometimes even causing market reactions and affecting cryptocurrency prices.
On October 18th, Vitalik Buterin clarified on social media that "if you see an article saying 'Vitalik sent *** ETH to a certain exchange', it's not actually me selling. I have donated to some charities, non-profit organizations, or other projects, and these sales transactions were made by the donation recipients because they needed to pay some fees. But since 2018, I haven't sold ETH for personal gain."
However, Vitalik Buterin did not disclose which charities, non-profit organizations, or other projects are selling the ETH he donated. Vitalik Buterin does have his own charity organization called Kanro (Vitalik Charity). To avoid misunderstandings in the crypto community that Vitalik Buterin is using his charity organization to "cash out", we found the wallet address of Kanro to investigate further.
In June of this year, Vitalik Buterin revealed his charity entity Kanro on social media, aiming to contribute to the fight against Covid-19 and other epidemics. At that time, he announced that he would invest 100 million US dollars in Covid-19 related research projects through the charity entity, and also publicly disclosed Kanro's wallet address information.
The on-chain data analysis platform Arkham tracked data shows that about four months ago, valuable cryptocurrency worth $100 million was indeed transferred to the Kanro address (which coincides with the time when Vitalik Buterin promised to provide a $100 million donation), as shown in the following figure, including:
Approximately 90 million USDC
372.4 million MVRS
777 pieces of LKT
1000 MTV coins
According to on-chain transaction records, Vitalik Buterin did indeed transfer ETH to Kanro, but only 0.01 ETH. Therefore, it is likely that this was for testing or verification purposes, and Kanro subsequently transferred the 0.01 ETH back to Vitalik Buterin.
However, just a week ago, Kanro's wallet address experienced an outflow of funds, with over 15 million USDC transferred through three transactions to a Gnosis Safe multi-signature wallet address starting with "0x f 20".
Later, USDC was transferred to three addresses in Coinbase and Gemini, two cryptocurrency exchanges, as shown in the following figure:
Transfer to Coinbase (0x 572) 24.899 million USDC
Transfer to Coinbase (0x 060) 24,999 USDC
Transfer to Gemini (0x f 67) 14,934,000 USDC
Currently, the total value of remaining cryptocurrency assets under Kanro (Vitalik Charity) entity is approximately close to 75 million US dollars, including about 74.567 million USDC, 1000 MTV, and 3.724 million MVRS. However, the number of ETH held within the charity entity shows zero, as shown in the following figure:
Therefore, technically speaking, as Vitalik Buterin said, he "has never sold ETH for personal gain".
Vitalik Buterin co-founded Ethereum in 2015. In October 2018, he publicly disclosed his holdings of ETH on social media. He stated that he did not hold the 900,000 ETH that was previously rumored, and his personal net worth never reached $1 billion. However, he did own 0.9% of the total supply of ETH at the time, which was approximately 67.5 million ETH out of a total supply of 750 million ETH.
According to Simon Cousaert, the data director of blockchain media The Block, based on Vitalik Buterin's publicly disclosed wallet address, he should currently hold about 250,000 ETH, which is worth approximately $390 million based on the latest price. Simon Cousaert added that over the past few years, Vitalik Buterin has sent about 205,000 ETH to exchanges through these public addresses, but it should be noted that he may also hold ETH in undisclosed wallet addresses or have sent them to other parties.
According to the analysis by The Block Pro as shown in the above picture, Vitalik Buterin has sent 30% of his total holdings of ETH, which is about 208,000 ETH, to exchanges. He claims that these ETH are used for donation purposes.
As a co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin holds a large amount of ETH, but he is unlikely to "dump" it for cash like the Rug Pull project team. On the other hand, Vitalik Buterin's role in the entire Ethereum ecosystem is gradually becoming more decentralized, as the development and innovation of Ethereum has begun to be maintained and promoted by many developers, contributors, supporters, and users in the community. Therefore, even if Vitalik Buterin occasionally sells some ETH, it will not have a significant impact on the long-term development of the Ethereum ecosystem.
