On July 11, 2024, Ethereum developers held the 137th Core Developer Consensus (ACDC) meeting via Zoom. The ACDC meeting is a series of meetings held every two weeks where developers discuss and coordinate changes to the Ethereum consensus layer (CL), also known as the beacon chain. This week's meeting was hosted by Alex Stokes, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation (EF). Developers discussed the progress of Pectra Devnet 1 and PeerDAS Devnet 1, as well as research generated by fork choice tests led by TxRx, a research team within blockchain software company Consensys.
The consensus layer and execution layer clients are ready to launch Pectra Devnet 1. Developers expect to launch the next testnet next week. A developer named "pk910" said that his team, most likely the EF Development Operations (DevOps) team, is testing a client combination between Nethermind, Geth, Teku, Nimbus, Lodestar, and Grandine. EthereumJS and Lodestar developer Gajinder Singh then noted that the EthereumJS client is ready for testing on Pectra Devnet 1.
EF DevOps Engineer Barnabas Busa said the CL client team is working on fixing bugs from PeerDAS Devnet 1. Once all client fixes are complete, Busa said the developers plan to relaunch PeerDAS Devnet 1 this weekend. Stokes shared an update on his pull request (PR) to change the hard-coded blob gas limit on EL and CL. He said he is working to define the impact of this PR on CL and EL, and formalize it into an Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) for possible inclusion in the Pectra upgrade.
The TxRX research team at Consensys has implemented an initial version of their fork choice test generator. The test generator is designed to identify bugs in client software that could cause a chain split, as well as any areas where the client software deviates from the CL specification in a non-trivial way. This research was funded by EF. The team, represented by Alexander Vlasov and Mikhail Kalinin, requested feedback on their work on the call as they seek to refine the test suite and enable more flexible test generation.
