On March 3, privacy browser Brave announced the acquisition of Tailcat, an open search engine developed by Hubert Burda Media Holdings' Cliqz team responsible for privacy search and browser products. Tailcat will be the basis for Brave Search. Brave search and the Brave browser are the industry's first standalone, privacy-protected browsers aimed at replacing Chrome and Google search. Google Browser angoogleB1 Search, which rely on tracking users across sites, have 70% and 92% market share, respectively.
The Tailcat search engine is built on top of a completely separate index that provides the quality people expect without compromising their privacy. Tailcat does not collect IP addresses or use personally identifiable information to improve search results.
Brave already has more than 25 million monthly active users (MAU) and more than 8 million daily active users (DAU), according to its BAT roadmap 2.0 data. By the end of 2021, it is expected to reach 50 million MAU and 17 million DAU.
