Elon Musk asked Grok about the probability of quantum computing breaking the Bitcoin algorithm (SHA-256), to which Grok replied, "Almost 0 in the next 5 years."

2025-08-03 12:35

BlockBeats News, August 3rd: Based on IBM's published article on quantum computing research progress, Musk inquired with Grok about the probability of quantum computing breaking the Bitcoin algorithm (SHA-256).

Grok replied that, according to assessments for 2025 based on investigations by NIST, IBM, and experts, the probability of quantum computing breaking SHA-256 is "almost 0% in the next 5 years and will be below 10% by 2035." This would require millions of error-corrected quantum bits, while current systems support only about 1,000 noisy quantum bits. Bitcoin's hash value remains secure for now.
