Metaverse is A compound word composed of the prefixes "meta-" and "universe". "Meta-" comes from the Greek preposition and prefix "μετά", which means "beyond the general limits", as well as self-referential and recursive connotations.

For example, "a meta story" can be understood as "a 'story' of story", that is, "meta story". Then, according to this logic, the metaverse is a "cosmic world" that transcends reality and covers everything in the universe.

The term "Metaverse" first appeared in the novel "Snow Crash" by American novelist Neal Stephenson. In his novels, the metaverse is a virtual space where characters can escape from harsh reality.

Neal Stephenson's work and the concept of the Metaverse have influenced many technology companies, including Google and Facebook, the latter of which officially changed its group name to Meta in October 2021.
